The Economy Corner: $5 for 7 days worth of Food

If you are reading this I know you are wondering how on earth did I spend just $5.00 on seven days worth of food. Especially without the use of coupons.

Here is what I bought. you be the judge..

From Walmart -

$2.00 large sack of potatoes
$.50 salt and pepper (the little cheap kind that comb together)
$.88  package of hot dogs
$.88 (additional) pack of hot dogs
$.40 white onion

Yes.. I caught a good walmart sale and I did what I had to do. As someone who was not getting food stamps and who had run out of food I learned to "economy" shop which basically means I wasn't shopping with nutritional value in mind. I was simply getting what I thought I could stretch to keep me feeling FULL for the rest of the week.

The potatoes are a good "hard time" dish because they are versatile. I could boil them until soft and smash them into mashed potatoes or cut and fry them and make frenchfries. I did both. The hot dogs I would cut up into small pieces and mix them into the mashed potato mixture just to add a little bit of meat. I would slice a little bit of the onion and finely chop it to add a little extra flavor and then add salt and pepper to taste.

It was pretty good.... :-)
